What travellers to Cambodia should consider
Angkor visits, Phnom Penh city time and remote forest travel can create different preparation needs. Long outdoor days and rural homestays make mosquito protection, safe drinking water and access to care important. Include border crossings and any longer backpacking route.
Malaria risk in Cambodia is limited and uneven, so the exact places you visit matter more than the country name.
Cambodia has no local yellow fever risk listed, but it checks certificates for some arrivals — relevant if your route from Malta passes through Africa or South America.
Rabies vaccination is usually discussed for travellers with likely animal contact, adventurous or remote trips, or limited access to urgent care.
Japanese encephalitis vaccine may be considered for longer stays or rural, outdoor travel during transmission seasons.
Avoid swimming or wading in fresh water where schistosomiasis is reported.
Day-biting mosquitoes can spread infections such as dengue, so bite avoidance is worthwhile throughout the trip.
- Discuss forest trekking and rural overnight stays.
- Avoid approaching monkeys around temples.
- Plan safe food and water choices on overland journeys.
