Malaria in Peru

  • Low risk

Low risk of malaria in the Amazon basin of Peru along the border with Brazil, particularly in Loreto province and in the other rural areas of Peru below 2,000m including that part of the Amazon Basin which borders Bolivia.

Awareness of risk and mosquito bite avoidance; tablets usually not needed.
  • No risk

No risk in the city of Lima and the coastal region south of Chiclayo.

    Mosquito bite avoidance.

This is not a prescription. Discuss malaria prevention with a travel-health clinician. If you develop a fever during or up to a year after visiting a risk area, seek medical help urgently and mention your travel.

Other travel health risks

  • Altitude
  • Biting insects or ticks
  • Influenza
  • Outdoor air quality
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Zika virus

What travellers to Peru should consider

Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu and Amazon lodges represent very different environments. High altitude needs a gradual approach and is not prevented by travel vaccinations. Yellow fever and malaria assessment should focus on any lowland forest route rather than treating all of Peru alike.

Current notice from the source: Oropouche virus disease outbreak. Re-check the latest guidance shortly before you leave Malta.

Malaria risk in Peru is limited and uneven, so the exact places you visit matter more than the country name.

Yellow fever occurs in parts of Peru, which is a separate question from any entry certificate rule.

High-altitude areas mean acclimatisation planning matters; vaccines do not prevent altitude illness.

Rabies vaccination is usually discussed for travellers with likely animal contact, adventurous or remote trips, or limited access to urgent care.

Day-biting mosquitoes can spread infections such as dengue, so bite avoidance is worthwhile throughout the trip.

  • Allow acclimatisation before strenuous high-altitude activity.
  • Tell your clinician about any Amazon extension.
  • Check access to care on multi-day treks.
